One of my favorite senior photos almost didn’t happen.
Actually… it wasn’t even supposed to happen.
I had just finished posing a senior. I looked down to check my camera settings, and as she relaxed, she laughed at something her mom said behind me.
Click.
That was the photo.
Not the perfectly posed one we’d just spent a minute setting up.
The one that ended up being everyone’s favorite happened in the split second after she stopped trying.
That happens a lot.
More than people realize.
Here’s the Secret Nobody Tells You
Most people think a photographer spends an hour telling you exactly where to stand, where to put your hands, where to look, and when to smile.
Sure, we do some of that.
But that’s not where the magic usually happens.
The magic happens in the moments in between.
When you’re walking to the next spot.
When you’re fixing your hair.
When you’re laughing because I made another terrible joke.
(Yes, I fully admit some of my jokes deserve an eye roll.)
Those little moments are where your real personality starts showing up.
I Don’t Want You Frozen
One of the first things I tell seniors is:
“You don’t have to hold that pose.”
In fact…
PLEASE don’t.
I want movement.
I want you to shift your weight.
Look down.
Look away.
Laugh.
Take a deep breath.
Walk toward me.
Turn back.
Those little movements make photos feel alive.
Because life isn’t frozen.
Why should your senior portraits be?
Your Best Smile Isn’t Usually the One You Practice
You know that smile.
The one you’ve used since elementary school picture day.
It’s perfectly fine.
But it’s usually not the smile your family knows.
Your parents know the smile you make when you’re trying not to laugh.
Your best friend knows the one that comes out when you’re being sarcastic.
That’s the smile I’m waiting for.
Sometimes it shows up right after I tell you,
“Okay… we’re done with this one.”
(Spoiler alert: I’m usually still holding my camera.)
This Is Why I Keep Talking
If you’ve ever wondered why I don’t get quiet during a session…
Now you know.
I’m asking questions.
Telling stories.
Making observations.
Occasionally embarrassing myself.
Because the goal isn’t just to fill the silence.
It’s to help you forget there’s a camera between us.
The more we’re talking, the less you’re thinking about posing.
And that’s usually when your personality shows up.
Parents Notice It Before I Do
One of my favorite moments happens when I hear a parent say,
“There they are.”
It’s such a simple sentence.
But it tells me everything.
Not,
“That’s a pretty picture.”
Not,
“I like that background.”
“There they are.”
Because suddenly, they’re not looking at a photograph.
They’re looking at their kid.
That’s always the goal.
The Best Photos Feel Like Memories
Years from now, I don’t want you to remember exactly how I posed your hand.
I hope you remember laughing.
Walking.
Talking.
Feeling comfortable.
Because when the experience feels genuine, the photos do too.
And that’s why some of my favorite images happen right after everyone thinks we’re finished.
Bottom Line
The best senior photos aren’t about holding the perfect pose.
They’re about creating enough comfort that you stop thinking about the pose altogether.
That’s when the real smiles show up.
That’s when your personality takes over.
That’s when the photos start looking like you.
And in my opinion…
That’s when the fun really begins.
