How to Choose a Senior Photo Location That Actually Feels Like You

A question I ask almost every senior is:
“If your senior photos could be anywhere, where would they be?”
The answers are usually pretty interesting.
Some immediately say downtown.
Some want wildflowers.
Some want water.
Some have no idea and look at me like I’ve just assigned homework.
And honestly, that’s fair.
Most seniors have never had to think about where they want to be photographed before.
But here’s the thing:
The location matters.
Not because it’s trendy.
Not because it looks cool on Instagram.
Because it helps tell your story.
The Best Location Isn’t Always the Most Popular One
Every year, certain locations become popular.
One senior goes there. Then another. Then another.
Before long, your social media feed starts looking like everyone attended the same photoshoot.
There’s nothing wrong with popular locations.
The West Bottoms are popular for a reason.
Downtown Lee’s Summit has some great spots.
Creeks photograph beautifully.
Wildflowers make almost everyone smile.
But the best location isn’t always the one everyone else is choosing.
Sometimes the best location is the one that feels like you.

Think About Who You Are, Not What’s Trending
This is where I think a lot of seniors get stuck.
They start searching Pinterest.
They scroll Instagram.
They save dozens of photos.
Then suddenly they’re trying to build a senior session around someone else’s personality.
Instead, start with a different question.
What do you love?
Not what photographs well.
Not what’s popular.
What do you actually enjoy?
Are you happiest outdoors?
Do you love being in the city?
Would you rather be near water than a brick wall?
Do you want your photos to feel adventurous, relaxed, bold, quiet, creative, sporty, or completely unique?
Your answers matter more than the latest trend.
Because twenty years from now, trends won’t matter nearly as much as seeing yourself reflected in the images.

Not Sure What Your Style Is Yet?
If you’re reading this and thinking, “That’s great, but I have absolutely no idea what I want,” you’re not alone.
Most seniors know what they don’t like before they know what they do.
That’s exactly why I created a quick quiz called “What Does Your Taste in Photos Really Say About You?”
In just a few minutes, you’ll discover the types of images, locations, and overall style that fit your personality best.
Because choosing a location gets a whole lot easier once you know what kind of experience you’re drawn to.

The Locations That Mean Something Usually Win
Some of my favorite sessions haven’t happened in famous locations.
They’ve happened in meaningful ones.
A family farm.
A dance studio.
A baseball field.
A property that’s been in the family for generations.
A hidden spot that nobody else gets access to.
Those locations bring something extra to the photos.
They tell part of the story.
And they create images that simply can’t be duplicated.
That’s one of the reasons I love meaningful locations.
Nobody else gets the exact same experience.
Nobody else gets the exact same photographs.
Because nobody else has your story.

Sometimes the Best Spots Aren’t Easy to Get To
I’ll let you in on a secret.
Some of my favorite locations require a little effort.
They’re off the beaten path.
You might have to walk a little farther.
You might have to trust me when I say, “I promise it’ll be worth it.”
But those hidden locations often create the images people remember most.
The extra effort usually pays off.
Kind of like senior year itself.

There’s No Rule That Says You Only Need One Look
One of the reasons location planning is so much fun is because different places create completely different feelings.
Urban locations feel different than wildflowers.
Creeks feel different than downtown.
Open fields feel different than hidden trails.
That’s one of the things I love about the Senior Team experience.
Instead of trying to fit everything into one session, team members get the opportunity to experience different locations, different seasons, and different looks throughout the year.
It’s a fun way to tell a bigger story.

The Right Location Helps You Feel More Like Yourself
At the end of the day, the goal isn’t to find the most impressive location.
The goal is to find the right one.
The place where you feel comfortable.
The place that reflects your personality.
The place that feels like it belongs in your story.
Because the best senior photos aren’t memorable because of the background.
They’re memorable because of the person in front of it.
One Last Question
So I’ll ask it again.
If your senior photos could be anywhere, where would they be?
The answer might tell you a lot more than you think.
