People assume photographers love hearing things like,

“These are beautiful.”

Or…

“Wow, your camera takes amazing pictures.”

(For the record, my camera appreciates the compliment. 😄)

Don’t get me wrong. I genuinely appreciate every kind word someone shares after a session.

But there’s one comment that stops me in my tracks every single time.

It usually comes from a parent.

Sometimes it’s whispered.

Sometimes they laugh when they say it.

Sometimes they get a little teary.

They’ll look at one of the images on the screen and simply say,

“That’s so them.”

Every single time I hear those three words, I know we’ve done what we came to do.

It’s Never About the Perfect Smile

When parents book a senior session, they think they’re looking for beautiful portraits.

And they are.

But what they’re really hoping for is something much harder to describe.

They want to recognize their kid.

Not the version who smiled because someone said, “Smile.”

The version who laughs with their whole face.

The one who smirks when they’re trying not to laugh.

The one who gives their little sister that look.

The one they’ve known for eighteen years.

That’s the person they’re hoping to see.

Parents See Things I Never Could

I’ve photographed hundreds of seniors.

I know how to notice great light.

Great expressions.

Great composition.

But parents notice something completely different.

They’ll point to a tiny expression that lasts half a second.

A crooked grin.

A raised eyebrow.

The way their senior stands with one hand in a pocket.

Things I might simply think look natural.

They look at those same images and think,

“I’ve seen that face since they were five years old.”

That’s the difference.

Seniors Usually Have a Different Favorite

One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that parents and seniors don’t always choose the same favorite image.

A senior might love the dramatic downtown portrait.

Mom falls in love with the quiet one where they’re looking off into the distance.

Dad picks the photo where they’re laughing.

Nobody’s wrong.

They’re just seeing different pieces of the same person.

Honestly, I love that.

Because it means the gallery tells a bigger story than one perfect picture ever could.

That’s Why I Take So Many Different Kinds of Photos

Some images are bold.

Some are serious.

Some are joyful.

Some are completely unexpected.

If every photo looked exactly the same, we’d only be telling one chapter of your story.

You’re more interesting than that.

So your gallery should be too.

The Goal Has Never Been “Perfect”

I’ve never wanted someone to walk away saying,

“Those are the most perfect senior photos I’ve ever seen.”

I’d rather hear,

“That is exactly who they are.”

Because twenty years from now, you probably won’t remember whether your hair curled exactly the way you hoped.

You will remember the kid in the photo.

And that’s the part worth preserving.

The Bottom Line

When someone says,

“That’s so them.”

I know we’ve created more than a portrait.

We’ve preserved a personality.

A season of life.

A smile that’s about to change.

A chapter that won’t come around again.

And if we can do that…

Then I’d say it was a pretty successful day.

There are moments during ordering appointments when the room gets really quiet.

Not because people don’t know what to say.

Because they’re seeing their child in a way they haven’t slowed down enough to notice in a long time.

Those moments remind me that this job has never been just about taking pictures.
