Senior year has a funny way of sneaking up on you.

You start the year thinking you have plenty of time. Then suddenly there are yearbook deadlines, college applications, football games, homecoming, graduation plans…and someone asks:

“Wait. When are we doing senior pictures?”

If that’s you, don’t panic.

There really isn’t one perfect month for senior pictures. The best time depends on what you want your photos to look like, your schedule, your activities, and honestly, the weather you’re willing to tolerate.

As a Blue Springs senior photographer, I photograph seniors throughout the year, and every season brings something different to a session.

So instead of asking, “When am I supposed to take senior pictures?” here’s what I’d consider.

Summer Senior Pictures: Green, Warm and Lots of Flexibility

Summer is a great choice if you want lots of green, flowers, warm evenings and a little more flexibility before school activities take over your calendar.

It’s also great for seniors who love summer clothes: dresses, shorts, sandals, lighter colors and all the things you probably don’t want to wear when it’s 42 degrees outside.

The downside?

It’s Missouri.

It can be HOT.

Fortunately, senior sessions generally happen later in the evening when temperatures are a little more manageable and the light is beautiful.

Summer is also a great option if your fall calendar is packed with sports, marching band, activities or a job.

Fall Senior Pictures: Yes, They’re Popular for a Reason

There’s a reason fall is one of the most requested seasons for senior pictures.

The colors are beautiful. Layers add texture to outfits. Temperatures usually cooperate. (Again…Missouri. I make no promises.)

But here’s something I want seniors to know:

You don’t have to wait for peak fall color to get beautiful fall senior portraits.

We can create gorgeous images long before every tree turns orange.

And because I use professional lighting instead of relying entirely on natural light, we have more options when it comes to locations, changing light and those increasingly early fall sunsets.

If fall is what you’re picturing, though, don’t wait until October to start looking for a photographer. Fall dates tend to go quickly.

Winter Senior Pictures Can Be Seriously Underrated

Hear me out.

Winter might not immediately scream “senior pictures,” but it can be amazing.

A studio session gives us tons of options without worrying about the weather, and winter outfits photograph beautifully: sweaters, jackets, boots and layers.

And if Mother Nature happens to give us snow?

Even better.

Winter is especially great for someone who wants something a little different from the traditional summer-field senior session.

Spring Senior Pictures: Fresh, Colorful and Close to Graduation

Spring brings flowers, fresh green, warmer temperatures and that unmistakable feeling that graduation is almost here.

It’s also a fun time to incorporate college plans, cap and gown photos or other pieces of what’s coming next.

The biggest challenge with spring?

Schedules.

Between prom, spring sports, graduation activities and everything else packed into those final months, calendars fill up quickly.

So even if you’re planning a spring senior session, I’d recommend getting it on the calendar well before spring arrives.

What If You Play a Fall or Spring Sport?

This is where planning matters more than the season.

If your sport is a huge part of your high school story, we can absolutely incorporate it into your senior portraits.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean your entire session has to happen during that sports season.

During your consultation, we’ll talk about the things you want included and figure out how to make them work with the overall look you want for your senior portraits.

Your senior session should fit your life, not the other way around.

Don’t Forget About Yearbook Deadlines

This isn’t the most exciting part of planning senior pictures, but it matters.

Every school handles yearbook photos differently, and deadlines can come earlier than families expect.

If you want to use an image from your senior session for the yearbook, check your school’s requirements and deadline before choosing your session date.

And please don’t assume you have until spring.

You may not. 😉

So…What Is the Best Month for Senior Pictures?

Here’s my incredibly helpful photographer answer:

It depends.

But that’s actually a good thing.

If you love warm weather, flowers and summer clothes, let’s photograph you in summer.

If you’ve been dreaming about sweaters and fall leaves, wait for fall.

If you want dramatic studio portraits and something completely different, winter may be perfect.

If spring feels like your season, we’ll plan around it.

There’s no prize for taking senior pictures during the “right” month.

What matters is creating photographs that feel like you.

When Should You Book Your Senior Photographer?

This part is different.

Even if you don’t want your senior pictures taken for several months, you don’t need to wait to book your photographer.

Booking early gives you more choices for session dates and more time to plan locations, outfits and the overall look of your session.

And planning is a big part of what we do at Case Studios Photography.

You don’t have to contact me knowing exactly what you want.

You don’t need your outfits figured out.

You don’t need a location picked.

You don’t even need to know what season you want yet.

We’ll figure that out together.

Your Senior Year. Your Season. Your Story.

There is only the time that works best for you.
