There’s a phrase I probably say at almost every senior session.

“Trust me… let’s walk just a little farther.”

Sometimes it’s down a trail.

Sometimes it’s around the corner of a building.

Sometimes it’s through a field that, at first glance, doesn’t look all that exciting.

And almost every time, I get the same look.

The one that says,

“Are you sure?”

I just smile.

Because I’ve learned something after photographing seniors for years.

Some of the best places aren’t the easiest to get to.

The First Spot Isn’t Always the Best Spot

When we pull up to a location, it’s easy to assume the best photo is going to be right there.

The obvious overlook.

The first row of flowers.

The popular mural.

Sometimes it is.

But more often?

The magic is tucked just a little farther away.

Maybe it’s where the light filters through the trees.

Maybe it’s the curve in the creek where hardly anyone walks.

Maybe it’s an old brick alley that most people pass without noticing.

Those are the places I get excited about.

It’s Not About Finding a Pretty Background

This surprises people.

I’m actually not looking for a pretty background.

I’m looking for a place that helps tell your story.

Maybe you’re happiest surrounded by trees.

Maybe you’re a city kid who lights up downtown.

Maybe there’s a family property that’s been part of your life forever.

Maybe there’s a baseball field where you’ve spent thousands of hours chasing a dream.

A meaningful location will almost always outshine a trendy one.

Because years from now, it still means something.

The Extra Five Minutes

There have been sessions where we’ve walked just five more minutes…

…and found the best light of the evening.

Or a patch of wildflowers no one else was using.

Or a quiet spot where we didn’t have to wait for crowds to clear.

Those extra five minutes have led to some of my favorite images.

Not because they were hidden.

But because they were worth slowing down for.

Trust Is Part of the Experience

There are moments during every session where I’ll ask you to do something that probably feels a little strange.

Stand in the middle of a field.

Walk toward the light.

Turn your back to the sunset.

Sit on a rock.

Walk through tall grass.

I promise there’s a reason.

I’ve already pictured the finished image in my head.

I’m just waiting for you to see it too.

The Destination Isn’t the Point

Here’s the funny part.

Months later, most families don’t remember how far we walked.

They remember laughing along the way.

They remember finding that unexpected spot.

They remember saying,

“I can’t believe this is where you took that photo.”

That’s one of my favorite reactions.

Because it reminds me that beautiful portraits aren’t about famous locations.

They’re about seeing ordinary places a little differently.

The Bottom Line

Sometimes the best senior photos really are just a little farther down the trail.

Not because they’re hidden.

But because they take a little trust.

A little curiosity.

And a willingness to go beyond the obvious.

I’ve found that’s true for photography…

…and for life.
